74 " X 74", Philadelphia ©2002. This is a Hawaiian pattern quilt that I started because I wanted hand applique work to do while on vacation at the beach during the summer of 2001. I love the contrast of the black background against the bright fabric. I'm using Barbara Root's traditional Hawaiian block patterns, and I've thrown in a few of my own. About half of the black backgrounds are pieced, adding more visual interest. After the events of September 11th, I felt compelled to represent the ash falling from the WTC and I added a few tears.
